San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas

San Cristóbal was founded on March 31 of 1528, by the Captain Diego de Mazariegos, with the name of  Villa Real. True-out the history of this city, many mane changes as been given, between which we can mention; Valle of Jovel, Ciudad Real, San Cristóbal. More than 400 years later in honor to the defending friar of the natives, Bartolomé de las Casas, the mane become  San Cristóbal de las casas.




The city of  San Cristóbal de las Casas, old  State Capital of Chiapas, is situated in the high valley of Jovel, rising at 2120 meters over sea level. It’s climate is tempered to sub-humid, with an annual temperature average of 19ºC, minimum 12ºC and maximum  26ºC.

The traditions are the alive soul of this city, that is without a doubt some surprises to visitors. It is possible to affirmed that most of the days of the year are festividad  and celebration, the tranquillity of the atmosphere of the city is interrupted by the sound of firework that announce a very near celebration, like  the Spring Fair, La Paz, or Cervantino Barroque Festival. Also it is distinguished by the diversity of crafts that can be found, since it is a rallying point of representatives of different ethnic groups like tzotziles, tzeltales and lacandones, who elaborate delicate artisan works in textiles, iron forge, amber, jade and pottery, only to mentioned some.

Within its attractive and most important ones, stands out: the Cathedral, the ex-monastery of  Santo Domingo, the Arc of Carmen, the Church of Guadelupe, the Temple San Cristobal, the Municipal Palace, the Museum of Amber, the Museum Na-Bolom, the Museum of  Jade, the Mayan Traditional Medicine Museum, the Museum of Los Altos, Plaza 31 de Marzo, and the Walking  Ecclesiastic, also to its surrounding the indigenous communities of  San Juan Chamula and Zinacantán, the Cañon del Sumidero, the Lakes of  Montebello and the archaeological zone of Palenque.
